For this first edition, Blend Masters will put the theme of wine blending, a Bordeaux wine tradition par excellence, in the spotlight through an innovative prism: Blend your Bordeaux 2050!

Beyond the contest dimension that will punctuate this event, the main goal is to make people think, to mature new ideas and to start a debate. These are all necessary reflections in view of the radical changes affecting the Bordeaux wine industry: global warming, new grape varieties, changes in consumer tastes and new technologies…

This edition will be based on the research work carried out by the scientific division of Bernard Magrez vineyards at Château La Tour Carnet

Blending Wine samples from the “La Tour Carnet 2050” project

Objective: To simulate the effects of climate change by 2050

The aim of the La Tour Carnet 2050 project, launched in 2022, is to simulate the impact of global warming on vines and wine by 2050. The aim is to study the adaptation of different grape varieties to the climatic conditions anticipated in this time frame.

Will Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc always be the most suitable grape varieties to produce the Grands Crus Classés of Bordeaux?

Based on current predictions of global warming, the temperature is expected to rise by 2°C to 4°C by 2050. Will we need to grow new grape varieties or change the way we grow current varieties to preserve the unique aromatic palette and balance that characterise the fine wines of Bordeaux?

Based on the experience of the technical teams and the scientific division of the Bernard Magrez vineyards, a unique system has been developed at Château La Tour Carnet, Grand Cru Classé in 1855, in the Médoc. This equipment makes it possible to generate a warming of the temperatures encountered locally by the vines, thus accelerating the development cycles of the grapes.

Developed using cutting-edge technologies borrowed from the aeronautics industry, the system should make it possible to predict the most suitable grape varieties for the production of high-quality Bordeaux wines by 2050.

The attending guests will have the chance to taste the different wines produced by the research work and to express their viewpoints on the future identity of Bordeaux wines.
